Project Assistant - Nutrition Action Healthletter
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit consumer organization conducting innovative programs in nutrition, alcohol policy, and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest-circulation health newsletter. CSPI strives to provide useful, impartial information to the public, represent citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies, and ensure that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 850,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to its Nutrition Action Healthletter and by foundation grants.
The Project Assistant provides administrative and research support to the Nutrition Action Healthletter (NAH) staff and reports to the Senior Nutritionist.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide general administrative support to the editor and senior nutritionist including filing, copying, faxing, sorting mail, and drafting correspondence.
- Copy medical journal articles using online tools and library research (NIH and other libraries).
- Distribute complimentary issues of NAH to scientific advisory boards and researchers.
- Process all department invoices, including monthly credit card bills.
- Assist Project Coordinators in photocopying, scanning, and gathering information about products.
- Maintain library of NAH publications.
- Make calls to manufacturers/researchers to collect or verify product information.
- Research, cook and shop for product comparisons, NAH articles and the Right Stuff and Food Porn sections of the Healthletter.
- Help proofread NAH articles.
- Help dissect foods for restaurant studies.
- Assist with updating the NAH article planning board and the department vacation calendar.
- Assist with other departmental activities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university and at least one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak effectively and professionally to individuals inside and outside of CSPI.
- Excellent research, writing and proofreading skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.
- Computer proficiency with MSOffice applications and database programs, with an emphasis on Word and Excel; experience with online research tools; and familiarity with Lotus Notes.
- Ability to work independently, with supervision and as part of a team.
- Interest in nutrition desired; and public interest commitment.
