Administrative Assistant - Legal Affairs – Part Time
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, D.C. that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest-circulation health newsletter. CSPI provides valuable, objective information to the public, represents citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies, and ensures that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 850,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to Nutrition Action Healthletter and by foundation grants.
The Legal Affairs project works on government affairs issues with CSPI project directors and scientists to develop strategies for legislation and regulatory action. The part-time Administrative Assistant provides project support to the Legal Affairs team and reports to the Director of Legal Affairs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support including answering phone calls, copying, faxing, maintaining paper and electronic files, handling incoming mail, and preparing correspondence.
- Maintain invoices and expenses and process for payment in a timely manner.
- Provide administrative assistance with legal filings.
- Help maintain subscriptions to legal publications, email and phone contact lists, and department databases.
- Help proofread documents.
- Assist with grassroots lobbying efforts.
- Assist with other departmental activities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; and demonstrated administrative experience.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.
- Computer proficiency with MSOffice applications and database programs, with an emphasis on Word, Excel and Powerpoint; experience with online research tools; and familiarity with Lotus Notes.
- Excellent research and writing skills with the ability to write routine correspondence, reports and fact sheets.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to individuals about on-going projects.
- Ability to work independently and with supervision.
